Growing a L.I.F.E. Garden : Master Gardeners of Stark County

A gardener, it is said, must have a green thumb. But the volunteers of the Master Gardeners of Stark County must also have a warm heart. Because it is in this heart that grows not only plants -- but the seeds of hope for a community and a generation.

The L.I.F.E. Garden, located in the Summit neighborhood of Canton, is one such sanctuary.

The children, many of whom come from economically restricted families, were motivated to learn about gardening through the Master Gardener projects provided in the garden and classroom. Art projects in the garden include a pole bean tepee, painted rocks, bookmarks from pressed flowers grown in the garden, and even recipes using the food. The senses of taste, smell and touch were provided to the children through herbs, veggies, flower arrangements and plants of tactile sensation. Cultural arts appreciation was provided with introduction of Scented Geranium plants, a plant native to Africa.

Future programs include plans to expand mediums such as journaling, scrap booking, painting, charting and additional plantings for theme gardens, i.e. zoo gardens (all plants have animal names, such as "rabbit ears," "hen," and "chicks").

Through a special project grant from ArtsinStark, The County Arts Council, city neighborhoods have blossomed on the outside, as the children have blossomed on the inside.
