A total of 188 community gardens in Cleveland and first-ring suburbs brought neighbors together to transform vacant lots into productive vegetable gardens in a project spearheaded by the Cuyahoga County office of OSU Extension. The produce from these gardens, valued at over $1 million, provides fresh vegetables for the gardeners and their neighbors, with surplus shared at local food banks. Community gardens serve as centers of neighborhood pride, citizen involvement, and inter-generational service learning.
