OSU Extension in Butler County has helped develop "choice" food pantries in the county and throughout the state. In choice pantries, participants choose their food rather than receive a pre-filled box. The traditional system often inadvertently wasted food: Clients threw away items they didn't like or couldn't use. In Butler County, Extension educator Dan Remley developed the accompanying "Rainbow of Choice" laminated card to help participants make selections from each food group -- grain, meat, dairy, fruit, vegetable, plus "combination" and "miscellaneous." Eight food pantries in Butler County now use the choice system.
